Samantha was at the university library, magical studies department about two years ago and had just looked up a specialty book on dragon spell design theory and as luck would have it, Ryumyo was just at the shelf pulling the book for his own use when she arrived. As a compromise they both sat down at a quiet table and shared the book, shared notes and ideas and theory. It was at this time that Ryumyo learned that Samantha was actually quite versed and knowledgeable in spell design (Spell Design: 5) and offered great insight to his studies, opening up new avenues of thought he hadn't thought of before.

A few months later they ran into each other at the library again, this time studying different magical topics, but still both in Spell Design and it's become apparent to each other that each of them are interested in spell design and the higher levels of magical understanding. Ryumyo knows though just by Samantha's aura that he's far superior to her magically (she's not initiated yet), but she seems eager to learn and a pure sort of eager. She doesn't lust for power, but yearns for knowledge and understanding.. to go as far as wisdom and magic can take her.

 

Some months after that, Ryumyo's talismonger (IC boss/employer) asked him to go across town into the blight/auburn to pick up some supplies from another talismonger. Upon arriving there he discovered that Samantha had been working some 4 years for this other talismonger and that she has been working in sorcery, conjuring, spell design as well as in enchanting. She offers classes to people for her employer, on a small one-on-one tutoring/mentor type basis on the basics of sorcery, conjuring, enchanting and spell design. It's then that Ryumyo discovers that she is very much informed and edcuated and skilled in these things, but her ability to transfer knowledge, to teach, to instruct is pitiful and she gets easily frustrated when people don't learn fast.

Just in the last few months, Ryumyo has inquired as to Samantha's background, her motivations, what makes her tick.. trying to get beneath the surface and discover just whom Samantha is.. probing her inquisitively as a consideration for a member of his magical group. It's during these times that they've gone to Deep Six in the Sargasso project to chat over a beer and its here that he's learned quite a bit.

 

Ryumyo's learned by when men come onto Samantha at the bar that she's very very sensative to male overatures.. the mana around her sparking with rage when men press themselves after she's told them no and to leave her alone. After a few meetings he discovers she had a bad experience in college and she doesn't even like the idea of a relationship with a man... or anyone.. ever. Researching this Ryumyo checks out college records, finds a record for Samantha McDonald and a picture that matches her.. and then on the matrix cross references that and finds a big stink in the Detroit media about five years previous where she was abducted by a serial rapist for two weeks and held in his basement where unmentionable things were done to her.

 

Ryumyo can sense a rage within her and knows she'll likely never agree to the tenents of the magical group about not killing.. or perhaps.. she seems like she might not have control of her emotions if a man pressed himself upon her at the wrong time and refused to take no for an answer.. he thinks she very well might just kill the guy. So.. the option of her to join the magic group seems distant at the moment.

 

Though.. she is VERY skilled in Spell Design and eager to spend countless hours modifiying and improving spells to form them into far superior products.. and so she seems a logical... 'mule' to do a lot of the spell design grunt work for him if she'd be interested in improving some of the spells he already has at simple levels.. and improving them and advancing them for his magical group. A win win situation.. she gets to study more spells.. and he gets high level spells designed for the magical group.

 

Also, during discussions with Samantha, he learns she frequently uses Shapeshifting magic and finds it troublesome to be on the other side of the city to find she can't take her human form again for she would then be naked and unclothed. It's then that Ryumyo arranges for and informs her that he's prepared a location in the Sargasso project within the protection area of a gang he has befriended. She's allowed a backpack with whatever she wants to keep in it and the gang will leave it alone. High in the battlements of one of the old battleships an old life ring box on the side of the ship has been left for her to put her gear in.
